Criminal Law

Criminal law sits at the heart of justice - it's where law meets human lives at their most vulnerable and consequential. For law students drawn to purposeful, people-centred work, few areas of practice are more directly meaningful.

Career paths in criminal law reflect a spectrum of values. If you're motivated by advocacy and access to justice, working as a defence lawyer - in private practice or through Legal Aid Queensland - means ensuring every person, regardless of background, receives fair representation. If fairness means accountability, a career as a prosecutor with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) puts you at the front line of upholding community standards. Those driven by systemic change may find their place in policy roles within the Queensland Department of Justice, or in reform-focused organisations like the Queensland Law Reform Commission.

For students with a global outlook, international criminal law - practised through institutions like the ICC or UN tribunals - offers the opportunity to address the gravest crimes on the world stage.
