Preparing for Applications

Understand

Written applications may encompass a range of different stages and documents including cover letters, resumes and selection criteria.

Understanding the purpose and strategies behind a successful application is a valuable capability to develop as it will support you well into your career. Whether you have never written a professional application before or you are looking to make final adjustments to your tailored application, support is available on your journey. These resources will help you to be better equipped to communicate your strengths and meet the expectations of potential employers.

Prepare

Are you preparing your written application or preparing for your interview? One of the key places to start is reflecting on your academic pathway, employment history and broader experiences and then considering how to articulate your competencies. Unpacking and articulating your experiences is essential to show your value to prospective employers.

STAR (Situation-Task-Action-Result)

The STAR method is a structured manner of responding to selection criteria as well as 'behavioural-based' or 'competency-focused' interview questions. The STAR Template will walk you through the steps of unpacking your experiences and effectively hone your skill using the STAR approach.

SEAL (Situation-Experience-Action-Learning)

Similar to STAR, SEAL assists students to articulate what you have learnt from an experience.

Unpacking the role

Jobs can be complicated when they are broken down from their title into individual roles and responsibilities. Unpacking the role is a strategic approach that helps you:

  • Filter out roles you don't want to apply for
  • Research the role and organisation
  • Identify key words and ideas for your application
